About MOTOKO HUYSVELD

Motoko's Experience

I have been working as a professional artist for over 20 years, based in France since 2005 to present.  I specialise in abstract paintings often working with oil, acrylic, watercolours and mixed mediums.

My works have been featured in several galleries and exhibitions mainly in France, but also across Europe and in Japan.

I have studied Arts in London, world famous Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (Byam Shaw),  The City & Guilds of London Art School, Camden School of Arts (now renamed as Hampstead School of Arts), which Henri Moore was one of the key founder.

During my courses in Fine Art Degree, Licence and Diploma in the above schools, my major interest was fast developing towards modern arts, especially abstract arts.

I was born in Japan in the 70s and moved to the U.K. in the 80s. Growing up in the U.K. had a profound influence on me and my work in that it was a multicultural society especially in London.  My interest in other cultures and art forms were also a source of inspiration.

My interest in Zen Art deepened while I lived in Kamakura in the 90s. It's very well known for Zen temples in Japan and also surrounded by plenty of nature as well.

I used to visit many temples and it did help balance my hectic work life back then, as in "reset" my mind and oneself within, reach inner peace.

I've also lived in Kyoto, another location well known for Zen temples and gardens in Japan.

I lived just around the corner from Zen temple, where I just love visiting when I could.  Even now, whenever I'm in Japan, I spend as much time as I could visiting these wonderful places.

Both Kamakura and Kyoto are surrounded by nature, where one could feel tranquil coexistence with nature.

These experiences in my life have influenced my work.

Zen philosophy that particularly influence my work are  "Kanso", "Wabi-Sabi", "Wa", "Ma" and "Mu". Different aspect of Zen philosophy appear throughout my work.

Motoko's Painting Style and Process

My work is influenced by the vibrant colours of nature and textures, as well as the emotions and experiences that we all share.  I strive to create pieces that are both visually stunning and emotionally impactful.

My art style is heavily influenced by nature and the beauty of the world around us.  Both its dynamic and delicate fragility of nature which is still full of mystery is what astonish me and keep me interested to learn more about our nature !  It keeps me surprised in wonder all the time !!

I strive to capture the essence of my subjects and bring them to life on canvas.

My work is also influenced by my travels and the cultures I have experienced.  I often return to Japan and whenever I'm in Japan, I often visit Japanese gardens.

My art style is characterized by bold colours, fluid lines, and a sense of movement.  I love to experiment with different mediums and techniques, which I could achieve through abstract paintings.

I begin each pieces with a vision in mind, but allow the materials and my instincts to guide me as I work.  I believe that the process of creating art work should be just as fulfilling as the finished piece.  I am a firm believer in the power of experiment and play in the artistic process.

I love the variety of painterly effect that can be achieved through colour, texture and freedom of expression in spontaneity and improvisation as the work develops into its own.  My work has been influenced by both Eastern and Western Arts, especially Japanese Zen and Abstract Expressionism.

I have experimented with Photography as well, primarily with natural themes.

Motoko's Philosophy

I believe that art has the power to heal, inspire, and transform.  My goal as an artist is to create work that not only looks beautiful, but also resonates with the viewer on a deeper level.  Perhaps it may provide few moments to forget things that might be a load on their mind.

Having grown up in both the Far East and in the West, I came to appreciate many different forms of Arts: Japanese Prints, Sumie, Ukiyo-e, Byobu art, Fusuma-e, Zen art, Religious Art, Calligraphy Art of the Far East, and Action Paintings, Abstract Expressionism, Lyrical Abstraction, Tachism, Fauvism and French Impressionism among many other form from the Western Art.  To mention several artists I particularly appreciate : Turner, Kandinsky, Pollock, Cy Twombly,  Mondrian, Monet, Matisse, Soulages and Zao Wou-ki among many others.

I do enjoy working in automatism approach, leaving much of the original energy created by spontaneity, similar ways of working in creating oriental calligraphy or action paintings.

I appreciate both expressive and contemplative nature of some of the arts mentioned above, particularly Zen arts, Religious arts, Sumi-e and oriental, calligraphy and Abstract paintings.

While I work and live, I do keep in mind Zen philosophy of simplicity and harmony. Harmony in that being in harmony with nature, and the environment and within oneself.  I also love the Wabi-sabi concept.

Jury's Comments on works by Motoko Huysveld:

"Always in unity and colour consistency, the works by Motoko Huysveld is built in skill and balance in space.  Projected, opposed or diffuse on canvas, painting, watercolour organize themselves like orchestra with rhythm and sensitivity.  Throughout various feelings, her work become more voluntary or more delicate with this concern for fairness and harmony.  In an organized chaos, her inspirations are being transcended by a talented creative imagination of quality.  Dynamic work filled with vitality that leads us to truth and spontaneity in a personal universe that deserves our attention.  Good work ." (Comments by the FNCF Jury)
